Rhinophyma | Rosacea of the Nose | Radiosurgery Treatment
Rhinophyma is a large, bulb-shaped, red-colored (ruddy) nose.
Causes
Rhinophyma was once thought to be caused by heavy alcohol consumption, but this is not the case. Rhinophyma occurs equally in those who do not drink at all and those who drink large quantities of
alcohol. The condition is much more common in men than in women.
The cause of rhinophyma is unknown, though it is thought to be a severe form of rosacea. It is a relatively rare disorder.
Symptoms involve an abnormal appearance of the nose:
- Bulb-like (bulbous) shape
- Many oil glands
- May be reddish
- Thickening of the skin
- Waxy, yellow surface
Exams and Tests
Rhinophyma may usually be diagnosed without any testing. A skin biopsy may be needed to confirm the diagnosis in unusual cases.
Treatment
Radiowave Surgery to reshape the nose is the best known treatment for rhinophyma.
Surgery may be done with a laser, scalpel, or a rotating brush (dermabrasion).
Recovery
The typical convalescence following rhinophyma surgery is approximately 3-4 weeks. Ointment and bandage dressings are used for the first 2-3 weeks. Pain is controlled with prescription medications
for the first few days. Most patients require only over-the-counter medications or are comfortable without pain medication within days of the procedure.
Expectations
Several weeks must pass post-surgery before a final look can be assessed. In the meantime, it is essential that sun protection using high SPF sunscreens is adhered to, and this should be lept up to
18 months after surgery in order to prevent a darkening of the wounds. Despite these inconveniences, patient satisfaction for this procedure is very high.
